"A day with Lady Day" written & directed by Laurence Dramaturge

Lead Actress

I was cast as the lead in A Day with Lady Day, a two-person theatrical work performed alongside the playwright and director, Laurence Dramaturge. The piece centered on an intimate exchange, with my character’s extended soliloquy unfolding in response to Laurence’s onstage prompts, creating a deeply immersive and emotionally driven performance. After two rounds of auditions, I was selected for the role and entered an intensive rehearsal process unlike any I had experienced before. Laurence maintained a highly controlled creative environment—scripts were never permitted to leave rehearsal, and I was hired specifically to fully memorize the work on-site while he continued pursuing funding for the production. His long-term vision included staging the play in a theater and filming it for a ticketed audience experience.

Over the course of seven and a half months, I was paid to rehearse and refine the performance. During this time, Laurence’s passion for the subject—clearly inspired by the legacy of Billie Holiday—deeply influenced my own connection to the material. Together, we developed what I still consider to be a powerful and compelling piece of theater. As rehearsals progressed, Laurence began traveling to meet with potential investors. Around the same time, I was navigating significant personal changes, including a relocation and major life transition. Our once-consistent rehearsal schedule gradually slowed, and eventually, communication ceased altogether.

To this day, I have not heard from Laurence again, and the project was never brought to fruition. Despite its unfinished state, the experience remains one of the most unique and artistically fulfilling chapters of my career. I had the rare opportunity to be fully immersed in the development of a new work, to collaborate closely with a passionate playwright, and to be compensated for an extended period of creative exploration. If anyone is familiar with Laurence Dramaturge—a playwright who mentioned ties to both New York and New Jersey—I would welcome the opportunity to reconnect or learn more about his current work.
